Permaculture and a Garden Report
with a link to my interview with PINA - Permaculture Institute of N. America
I did not have much time for writing this week, mainly because I am suffering from shingles and it’s hard to type on the computer. Yuck! But I am getting better quickly, mostly due to using DMSO. I learned about the efficacy of Dimethylsulfoxide for shingles and many other conditions thanks to A Midwestern Doctor, one of my favorite subscriptions here on Substack: https://substack.com/@amidwesterndoctor.
It was a good week for talking, not writing. On Monday I got to do an interview with Gray Shaw of the Institute for Sustainable Forestry on KMUD radio in Garberville, California. Gray makes biochar on his forest land in the redwoods, so we had a great conversation. Then on Wednesday I did a really fun livestream with Jesse Tack of the Permaculture Institute of North America. PINA is a professional association for Permaculture Practitioners in North America, and I have had the privilege of working with their Forest Ecology Restoration Program (FERP). Here is a link to some videos they produced on the program. I really enjoyed talking to Jesse about biochar in general, and recounting my experiences working with the FERP trainees, a group of young people interested in careers in forest restoration.
Here is a short video clip from one of our projects where we melded the FERP crew with a Grayback Forestry crew to turn burn piles into biochar using both the Ring of Fire and the Conservation Burn method:
I will just wrap up this short post with some pictures from the garden this week. The cover crop mix is really taking off. I have a bunch of other beds that are done and ready to plant with cover crop, but I am going to have to wait a bit until I feel better and I am looking forward to some lovely WOOFers who are supposed to show up this week to help. Yay for WWOOF!
